Paths forward

Healing looks different for every family

There is no single path forward after abuse. At Deirdre’s House, care is shaped around each child and family, meeting them where they are and supporting them as they work toward their own goals. These stories reflect just a few of the ways children and caregivers have found support, healing, and hope at Deirdre’s House.

Finding their way back to childhood

A young child came to Deirdre’s House after experiencing sexual abuse. In a warm, child-friendly space, a specially trained professional helped the child share what had happened in a way that felt safe, gentle, and appropriate for their age.

From there, healing happened little by little. With counseling and the steady support of their parents, the child began working through difficult emotions and rediscovering the comfort of familiar routines and favorite activities.

By the time the family reached their counseling goals, something important had begun to return: the freedom for this child to simply be a child again.

With their family beside them and new tools to carry forward, they left Deirdre’s House ready to continue healing, growing, playing, and embracing the childhood every child deserves.

Family counseling

Healing together as a family

When a child experiences abuse, the pain can ripple through the entire family. One child and parent came to Deirdre’s House carrying that pain together. The parent was overwhelmed with guilt and struggling to know how to help their child heal.

At Deirdre’s House, they were able to receive counseling in Spanish, their own language. They could speak from the heart, express difficult emotions in the words that came naturally, and feel fully understood during an incredibly vulnerable time.

Little by little, things began to change. The child found healthy ways to process what had happened and the parent began to let go of guilt, heal alongside their child, and feel more confident providing the love and support their child needed.

Together, they reached their counseling goals and found their way back to everyday life, not unchanged by what happened, but stronger, more connected, and equipped to move forward together.

Individual and group counseling

A future filled with possibility

After experiencing sexual abuse by someone known to the family, a young survivor came to Deirdre’s House carrying the weight of what had happened and trying to find a way forward.

Through individual and group counseling, he found a safe place to process his trauma, connect with others, and begin rebuilding his confidence. With time and continued support, the experience that had once felt so overwhelming no longer had to define what came next.

He began looking toward his future with hope and believing in what was possible for him. That future eventually included an incredible milestone: earning a full scholarship to college.

Today, he isn’t simply moving beyond what happened to him. He’s moving toward the life he worked so hard to build, with the confidence, strength, and tools to thrive.
